Woman in the Post of Speaker


Meira Kumar was elected unopposed as the first woman speaker of Lok Sabha on 3 June 2009. Meira Kumar was born in Patna to the former Deputy Prime Minister and prominent Dalit leader, Babu Jagjivan Ram and freedom fighter, Indrani Devi. Her educational qualifications include a degree in law and postgraduate degree in English. She is fluent in Hindi, English, Spanish, Bhojpuri and Sanskrit. She was selected as a civil servant (Indian Foreign Service) in 1973. Ms.Kumar entered electoral politics in 1985 and was elected from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh defeating political heavyweights like Ram Vilas Paswan and Mayawati, two powerful Dalit leaders. She has been elected to Parliament five times and has also served as social justice minister. She is the only Dalit speaker elected after G.M.C. Balyogi. Meira Kumar is married to Manjul Kumar, a Supreme Court lawyer and they have three children.
